Maltby,,miners memorial community group
1. Memorial to commemorate the lives of the 27 men who lost their lives in the 1923 pit disaster. You have probably all seen the boulder that arrived from Scotland. It is now being worked on by the stone mason and will be in place on Limekiln Lane in readiness to be unveiled by Lord Scarborough at 1230 on Tuesday 28th July 2015. There will be a bit of a ceremony starting with me giving a short address ref: the history of the disaster, followed by a service by the Reverend Margaret Caunt. Lord Scarborough will then address the people and unveil the stone. After that there will be an opportunity for people to lay wreaths etc. Then a short display of dancing by Paul Davenports dance team. Donna will then close the ceremony with a short statement and prayer. After which we will retire to the stute for light refreshments (bar will be open). Guests include Sir Kevin Barren, Mayors of Rotherham and Doncaster and, most important, relatives of the men who perished in the explosion. All welcome. Work is underway organising the road to be closed off. Anyone arriving in a car will be directed to a parking area. The less cars - the better. Try and share cars if possible.
