wildlife and the quarry !

Posted by holliefromstainton on February 20, 2011 at 7:47 AM

Hi everybody and welcome to the site what a good idea ! Ive lived here all my life all of 11 years lol Me and my dad Heath recently made a huge bird pie for the wildlife that visit our garden. Through the cold weather the animals barely have any food so it would be a really good idea if everyone in stainton but out more food for the wildlife. As a result the following birds have been attracted to my garden ... a pair of robins, bullfinch, greenfinch, chaffinch, bluetit, coaltit, great tit ( not my grandad lol), thrush, rewn, blackbirds, woodpecker ( on the odd occasion), sparrows, sparrow hawk , magpies and jackdaws ( greedy devils), pheasant, a greedy little squirell, and much to the annoyance of my dad there is a mole making a regular appearance in the rear lawn ( i love it ). The bird pie that we put out for the animals was made out of lots of peanuts , wild bird seed , crusts and is held together by tesco's very own lard ( yuck). The stainton quarry is a great place to walk around and i have found lots of fossils that have come from the cole mine in maltby these must be millions of years old. On a recent walk the large slurry pool looked like a seaside resort although in black lol. In recent years even i have noticed the everchanging landscape. And i am sure in time when its grassed over it will look amazing ! Please can we all keep our eyes out for flytippers and litter bugs ! If anybody needs any help cleaning out the stream in summer give me a shout and i will get my wellies out !

Hello Hollie.
Really love what you have written about Stainton Village.
You can tell how much you and your dad love Stainton and its wildlife!
Its so refreshing to hear someone as young as yourself helping the wildlife out, and taking an interest in the world around you. I know if I had found some fossils I would be thrilled.
Any time you want to help clear our stream out, feel free lol.
Susanne.

This is great Hollie. I'm so glad the birds like your pie, they really need it at this time of year. Thanks for putting it on our website.
