Paul Davenport says...Hi Paul
Thank you for getting back to me.
John Thomas was born 8th July 1857in Warter ERY, eldest son of George Thomas and Elizabeth(nee Story) he had three brother, all of whom became Blacksmiths and two sisters who died young.
John married Johanna Curtis on 5th Mar 1879 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Pocklington, they moved to Stainton where they had five children. Sadly only two lived to adulthood. Johanna died 22 Oct 1889 of Tuberculosis and was buried 25 Oct 1889 in St Winifred's Churchyard.
Left with young children to care for John married Susannah Smith 16th Feb 1880 at St Winifred's and they had 4 daughters, one died in infancy.
John was Blacksmith and Sexton to St Winifred's for about 40 years and he died 6 Feb 1927 at Cragg House, Stainton. Susannah died 13 Feb 1930.
My late Father in Law was his Grandson from the first marriage but did not know his Grandfather to well due to a family disagreement after the second marriage. I have never seen a photo of John but will ask Mother in Law if she has any.
Not sure if this is what you wanted but I can supply names and dates for his parents, siblings and children if you would like them. There are probably descendants of his children from his second marriage that may know more that I do.
It was fascinating to hear he may have contributed to songs. My late Father in Law was also a Pianist/Organist in his younger days.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Kind Regards
Hilary

Hilary Thomas says...Hi Hilary,
Sorry it took so long to find this mail but anyway John pointed it out to me so here I am. I'm currently working on a book about the song collection of R.A Gatty and John Thomas is a contributor to the collection. I certainly would like to know more about his life particularly as, like myself, he appears to have hailed from the East Riding. I'd be very interested in any information you've got. I especially would be interested in a photo of him if one exists.
best wishes
Paul
I am researching my Husband's Family History. His Great Grandfather, John Thomas, was a Blacksmith in Stainton and Sexton of St Winifred's Church for about 40 years.
I know he is buried in the churchyard along with his two wives and several of his children.
At the time of his death (1927) he lived at acreage House.
If anyone can add to my information I will be delighted to hear from you.
On of his sons, also John Thomas, is remembered on the WW1 Memorial.
Kind Regards
Hilary Thomas

I am currently pursuing enquiries regarding the folk-song collecting of the Rev. Reginald Gatty and Ralph Vaughan-Williams in the area in 1907. I have several songs collected by them in Stainton, including a Christmas carol which appears to be unique in that it has not been recorded elsewhere in oral circulation. I would like to know more about the singer whom I believe to have been Mr. Thomas, one of the blacksmiths mentioned in the website info. Can anyone comment on this?
best wishes,

Hi Kate,
A new 'toddler' swing has neen installed in the playpark.
Hope this meets your needs and that the children get lots of fun from it.

kate watkins says...Could the parish council consider adding to the park. I have a Four year old and a One year old, I dont feel Stainton park is appropriate for this age group, so I have to drive to a neighbouring village. A baby swing and slide would be wonderful addition for the young children in the village.

Is it possible to obtain a copy of the 'old smithy, near Manor farm' photo for use in a forthcoming publication?
Many Thanks,
Paul

Hi Kate,
I'll bring this up at the next meeting. Not having very young children, I must admit that I haven't noticed this ommission.
Cheers

john hawkins says...Hi John,
Great to hear from you, and welcome to our site. It's really interesting to hear about your association with the village. I replied as you have to Len, but we only have the photo's on our History of the village pages. Len's interest is that his father worked at the farm for three months in the 1920's and kept a diary, the entries of which are fascinating. I'd love to hear more about your family in the village and your visit in the 60's.
Where in Australia do you now live? We are getting a lot of interest from countries all over the world.
Cheers
John
