I really enjoy reading on this website, it holds great articles. Don't put too fine a point to your wit for fear it should get blunted. by Miguel de Cervantes. dfekcfgacefeeedb
Hi Richard & John,
yes my mum was from Liverpool originally. I;m looking forward to going back to the village for a visit and pop in the three tuns for my dinner.
Hello again John, yes I think Iremember Gary McMahon and his family,I think they were from Liverpool origionally. I would appreciate a quick reminder regarding the nostalgic, historical fact finding meeting when next on the agenda. Can I ask you if there will be a rememberance service at the church this year? being an ex Falklands vet. I should like to attend. Best Regards...Richard
Hi Richard.
Great to hear from you. I'm not sure if the Village Hall Trust are doing another event like last years. They do events all through the year so it will probably crop up, and I'll let you know.
In and earlier message you mentioned Mrs Limbert. I received another message from Gary McMahon saying that he lived next door to Mrs Limbert in the cottages behind Rose Cottage. He then moved to 8 Scotch Springs. We now live in the bungalow where the old cottages used to be. If you would like to contact Gary, just click on the reply button to his posting further down this page.
Cheers
John
Richard Yates says...Hi John, I have not spoken for a long time but would be interested if you were having any more fact finding get togethers anytime in the future. Could you let me know if this will happen anytime soon. Regards Richard.

Garry McMahon says...I was born in the cottages behind Rose Cottage in Stainton village in 1959. We lived next door to Mrs Limbert head teacher at the school.
We later moved to 8 Scotch Springs and lived there till 1970.
I am now living in Liverpool and hope to be visiting the village again soon.
Hi Gary,
Many thanks for posting on our website. It would be very interesting to meet with you and get more information about the village. Sadly both properties you mention are gone, but a feeling of what they were like would be great

Hi Andrea
Thanks for showing interest in our village.
In 1953, a group of archeolgists found remains of a Temple at Chapel Holt, which is on the northern edge of the village. Ruddle Dyke is a small stream which starts in Braithwell, runs alongside Ruddle Mill Lane, then turns north east to Chapel Holt where it make a sharp u-turn to flow south into Stainton via the quarry. The remains of the temple included some walls, human bones and skeletons (thought to be Roman), pottery, charcoal an a boars tooth. The site showed eeidence of 3 ages, Early Pagan, Roman and Medieval. The archeologists believed that this could have been part of a Roman outpost, of which there are many forming a circle around Danum (Doncaster). The quarry certainly supplied stone to build Danum.
In 1994 there was a further archeological dig, in the quarry nearer to Holme Hall, which found large quantities of pottery, metalwork and evidence of a kiln. (There's mention of it here on the website on the sub-page attached to History of Stainton).
There is now a house at Chapel Holt, althogh it is not built on top of the temple.
Hope this helps
John
Andrea says...Hi staintonvillage.net, I'm writing from Italy 'cause I'm doing some researches about the Braithwell's area in Roman British Age. I have read on your website this interesting new: "... in 1953 some stones were found on the outskirts of Stainton at Chapel Holt which were though to have been part of a small Roman temple." What was exactly founded? Could you tell me more about this? And Chapel Holt what is in these days? I went in Braithwell and at the Doncaster Museum on May, 2012 to study the Braithwell Hoard.
Regards
Andrea
